Chapter 10

I came out of the bathroom and everyone was gone; the place was practically a ghost town. The only detectives left were Jimenez and Wilson. I walked over to Jimenez, shaking my head.

“Where did everyone go?” I asked. “I wasn’t in the ladies’ room that long, was I?”

“Naw,” he said. “Everyone was just waiting on you to get the address so they could bug out. Only about a quarter of them were even up here, the rest were already in their cars.”

“Why didn’t you go?” I asked him. Jimenez had more seniority over most of the detectives, and that included Cavanaugh. It was Cavanaugh’s SWAT experience that had others deferring to him instead of Jimenez, and I got the feeling Manny liked it that way.

“Are you kidding, chica?” he said, looking very self-important. “Someone has to run this place when the boss is gone.”

“Maria said you couldn’t be on this case, didn’t she?” I grinned at him.

Maria was Manny’s wife. Even at four-foot-eleven, she was a force to be reckoned with. She ran the Jimenez household, and if she didn’t want Manny on the serial killer case, he had damn well better stay clear, because she would find out. He was convinced she had spies everywhere. He puffed himself up.

“Pffft, girl, I don’t take no orders from her...I give the orders. I’m Detective Manuel Jimenez...I’m the man!”

“So, she said no,” I said, laughing.

Jimenez deflated. “Yeah,” he said sheepishly. “She wants to have another baby and she said I can’t give her one if I’m dead.” He grinned, rubbing his chest with both hands in slow, sensual strokes. “She can’t get enough of Manny the Man!”

I rolled my eyes and went back into the observation room to see if that can of Pepsi was still there. That’s the funny thing about this place. You set something like soda, chips, or candy down and it disappears the moment you turn your back...but only if it’s not open. I should have known the can would be gone. I was my fault for not opening it when I had the chance.

Now that I had taken care of my most pressing need, I found that I was getting hungry. In the mornings I usually have pastries or some other breakfast-type food with my sister and my parents. Most families get together over the dinner table, but because of our weird schedules, breakfast is the only time we are all available. I wanted so bad to call my parents and Kelli and tell them what was going on. I called my folks this morning and told them I had a missing person’s case unrelated to the serial killer. I hated lying to them, but I didn’t want them to worry. When it was time to worry, I would let them know. I made my way down to Johnson’s office. Shirley was behind her desk.

“Boss said for you not to leave,” she said, viewing me over the tops of her glasses. I rolled my eyes at her.
